Lesson: Submit to One Another

Submission is a challenging concept to accept. In fact, none of us want to place ourselves under another’s authority unless we have to. At least, not until we learn G0d’s true meaning of submission and the blessings it can bring. Here are a few specific verses about submission.

Submit to One Another. Submit to one another out of reverence for Chr1st. Ephesians 5:21. J*sus was willing to submit himself to the world for our benefit. He did not have to. Likewise, believers should be willing to submit to one another.

Submit to Elders. In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “G0d opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” I Peter 5:5.

Submit to Religious Leaders and Authorities. Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden for that would be of no benefit to you. Hebrews 13:17.

Submit to Bosses. Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about G0d our Savior attractive. Titus 2:9-10.

Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the L0rd. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the L0rd, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the L0rd as a reward. It is the Lord Chr1st you are serving. Colossians 3:22-24. These passages refer to our attitude to the people we work for.

Submit to Parent’s Authority. Children, obey your parents in the L0rd, for this is right. Honor your father and mother—which is the first commandment with a promise—so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.  Ephesians 6:1.

Submit to Spouse. Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the L0rd.  Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.  Colossians 3:18-19

Submit to Government Authority. Submit yourselves for the L0rd’s sake to every human authority; whether to the emperor, as a supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. For it is G0d’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people. Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as G0d’s slaves. Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear G0d, honor the emperor. I Peter 2:13-17

 ****

As a Chr1stian your top authority is G0d. You should first be in submissive to Him, then to others.

He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed. Daniel 7:14

 *****

Let’s look at it from the Persons in Authority’s point of view. Most people hold some authority, whether teacher, parent, or other. Did you know that a person in authority should submit to those under their authority.

To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Chr1st’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed. Be shepherds of G0d’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as G0d wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. I Peter 5:1-15

And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him. Ephesians 6:9

Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. Ephesians 6:4

 J*sus’s Words:

J*sus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles l0rd it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the S0n of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:25-28

Who do you find it most difficult to submit to? Why?

What is the main purpose of submitting ourselves to others?

After considering this lesson, why would you consider being more submissive to others?
